We all want the best life possible for new and old pets as they are after all a member of your family. A happy life starts with nutrition and you need to give a top priority to building and maintenance of their health. The quality of nutrition you give to pets is going to impact their health, wellbeing and quality of life.
To ensure your pets lead a happy, healthy and energetic life a diet should be balanced and contain the necessary nutrients and the right amount of proteins, vitamins and minerals backed by science. Pet owners can achieve enhanced nutrition for their pets by considering core principles which will ultimately help to promote their good health and wellbeing:
1. MIX MEAT AND VEGETABLES
While meat is a rich source of proteins, vegetables provide nutrients like dietary fibre, potassium, vitamin A and C. Pets need quality protein in natural forms such as lamb, salmon, sardine and turkey meat. They should also give them vegetables like potatoes, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower and cucumbers.
2. NUTRIENT DENSE FOODS
Pets should be given food that is rich in essential nutrients like fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals. These help to keep them healthy and strong.
In contrast, Poor nutrition and foods containing excessive amounts of sodium, potassium or phosphorus can make dogs suffer from kidney disease. Taking too much food can cause obesity in them. To avoid such health problems, pets should be given a balanced diet containing adequate amounts of nutrients which are necessary for their health.
3. AVOID COOKING MEAT
Meat should not be cooked as it can lead to the loss of many beneficial nutrients essential for pets’ health.
4. PETS DON’T NEED GLUTEN
An intolerance to gluten can damage dogs’ gastrointestinal tract if they eat foods containing gluten. They will remain malnourished even when they take a lot of gluten-rich food. Gluten can result in weight loss and make dogs suffer from chronic diarrhoea.
5. AVOID FOODS CONTAINING CHEMICALS AND PRESERVATIVES
Certain foods contain chemicals, preservatives, artificial colouring and animal by-products. These can be detrimental to the health of dogs and cats. So these should be avoided but it is sometimes hard to understand what you are buying. Buy natural at all times and ultimately, let your pets decide.
6. NO ALLERGY CAUSING FOODS
Certain foods can cause allergies and symptoms of itchy skin, chronic ear infections, diarrhoea and vomiting. Avoid foods like corn, wheat and soy.
